  1. These models are finished. I was able to get some billboards printed up for the larger building. These have been fun. I am hoping to do some more of these, but I don’t have any more printed up, so it will be a while before I get back to these.

  4. This week I was able to get this building project finished up. Was a fun project. This laser cut building was easy to assemble and will make a great addition to my CAV terrain. I also took a few shots with some CAV models in there for scale. Very fun build here is hoping that we get more of these kind of buildings and such in the future. Very good value for the money, imo.

  5. The Tsuiseki is a great looking model. In the works in progress section, I posted some shots of another flyer I was testing out a painting method on. I really enjoyed painting up that model with airbrush. I also used that model to practice on, so I could do better with flyers in the future. The Tsuiseki models below were painted in a similar way.

  6. And here we have another of the new releases the Despot B. This is a redo of the KS1 Despot. Its larger, the end pictures will show you the differance. So let's show you the package. In the package you should find 2 hulls, 2 left tracks, 2 right tracks, 2 turrets and 2 sets of GMs. So lets put one together. Here are all the parts you need. First trim off all the extra flashing on the turret. There is also a main gate to remove from the rear. Sorry no pic. Next remove the Gate from the GMs. Then work on the flashing on the Treads and hull. Then separate the treads from the hull. Then remove the main gates. After some cleanup, it's time to assemble. Let's start with the Right Tread. Then the Left Tread. Then we put the GMs on the back of the Turret. Next all you do is add the turret to the hull and you are done. I do not glue mine, what you do is up to you. So let's show some comparison pics of the new and the old Despot. So way more detail, it's a bit bigger than the old. It's easy to assemble. They look great, the pictures can say more about them than I can. The only downside is I may need more of them. Let me know what you think about them down below. Thanks

  7. 5th Knights Assault Regiment :: 11th Tactical Air Wing In 2019, Todd Farnholtz aka Mastergunz announced that he was going to organize and run a non-traditional tournament based on the WarMaster tournament described in the CAV:SO rulebook. I can't recall the exact rules but it was something like 6 models max, aircraft and upgrades allowed. I thought about this list a lot during that summer and came up with the idea of playing an all aircraft list. An all aircraft list had several advantages as it was immediately immune to all Indirect Fire weapons (Rockets) and anything with the SA: Strike (MACs). This cut out a sizeable chunk of the weapons you might see on the battlefield. Additionally, the Aircraft were relatively cheap and I was able to afford upgrades for my entire Air Wing. I chose external armor and picked the type that worked against non-energy weapons. This made me more vulnerable to energy weapons but I guessed that the trade off was worth the risk. I was also able to afford upgraded pilots for all of my models. In practice, I found that the aircraft had an 8-12 inch sweet spot where they out-ranged most of the weapons they were vulnerable to. I practiced the list several times that summer against my play test partner and bounced the idea off of my friend Ross Hines - who couldn't play in the WarMaster tournament. Otherwise, I kept the list very secret as surprise was perhaps my biggest advantage. I won the WarMaster tournament... As for the unit, CavBoss already had the 5th Knights Assault Regiment and he made my unit part of it as the 11th Tactical Air Wing. All of the details on the models are hand painted by me and dedicated to my wife. She loves Dragons and her birthday is 5/11.

  9. A long time ago when the CAV models were pewter. The game rules were also a bit different. This group of CAV’s was intended to be mercenary in nature even then. Never purchased in any specific order or anything, more like the rule of cool, plus what was available. The paint job was started probably 15 years or more ago. The models got shelved for a long time in their half finished state. Until recently when The Dirty Dozen resurfaced to find themselves hired and pressed into service once again. This ramshackle group was pulled together from many races and factions, most of them not believing in the line of politics or governmental boundaries. Now they sell their services to the highest bidder and fight for credits and glory.

  12. Michael's Mermaids One of my best friends is David Michael. He has a very insightful sense of humor and a tendency to hate movies with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. He's genuinely a lot of fun to hang out with and will make you regret taking that 'if the dice are with me' chance in any miniature game. CAV piqued his interest in 2019 and we got in enough games that he was ready to buy and paint some minis. Buying isn't his problem... painting well, it might as well be a movie with a bad opening scene. 🙂 Then of course, Covid hit and we couldn't play CAV anymore... but I had a plan! I decided I'd paint up a small mercenary force for David and gift it to him when we got back to playing. Thus was born Michael's Mermaids. I'm not really sure what their background story is but I can imagine someone yelling into the CO's (David's) office and saying, "...the press want to know what our unit is called." The pure level of snark that came back was so thick it stuck and the unit's been known as Michael's Mermaids ever since. I painted the aircraft during the first virtual CAVCon when Jon and I hung out for the weekend and streamed non-stop CAV stuff - there might be video of that somewhere on Youtube. There is also an attempt at a battle report between Michael's Mermaids and my Templar unit the Royal Blues on the forums.

  13. 117th Bastion Regiment In 2020, I was really struggling with my desire/ability to paint. I just couldn't master any motivation. I'm not the kind of person who paints just to paint. I need a goal - like getting my force ready for an upcoming game. I wasn't playing much of anything during the pandemic and I went months without even going into my painting room. I reached out to my friend Ross Hines and asked him to give me an assignment, to pick a faction for me to paint. My thought was I'd take his 'homework' and do some serious painting over that weekend. Did I mention that Ross is an art teacher...? 🙂 He's also STUPID talented when it comes to art, designing CAV lists, and kicking my a** on the tabletop battlefield. He assigned me to paint some Malvernis models. I'd watched some tutorials from an awesome Twitch streamer - Next Level Painting about how to paint star fields. And here we are... Painting these models got me out of my doldrums and back into painting as something I enjoy. I need to make an actual playable force out of these models. I must own at least a dozen more Banshees. That's probably not enough. 🙂 CavBoss liked my paint scheme enough he assigned it to the 117th Bastion Regiment - a fine compliment indeed.

  18. I'm in the mood to make a new list and I want to play pirates. Just some small time thugs who are doing a bit better than just surviving. They are small enough that they have to work the fringes and can't really face any serious forces. Consequently, they pick their targets carefully and switch areas often to avoid attracting attention. I decided to go for 2500 points so I could play them in smaller pick-up games. In my mind, this unit is a 'cult of personality'. The leader and his/her right hand person are the center of the band - each has their crew which operate around them. In game, based on the points, I see this as couple of attack squads. Attack squads because they don't really have a better plan. They are very much a one trick pony, a smash and grab unit with violence as their main and only tactic. I decided that the leaders pilot the only CAV models in the unit. The rest of the crew operate vehicles - remember these are small time thugs. I opened the CAV store and scrolled through looking for models I liked the look of. Specifically, I wanted CAVs I'd never used/painted before. I settled on a Warhawk for the second in command and a Voodoo for the Captain of these scurvy pirates. 🙂 I don't really like kit-bashing models, @TigerWraith is more 'that guy'. So I looked hard at the available vehicles and the remaining points and ended up with these squads: Given the limitation that I needed cheap vehicles that didn't require kit-bashing to create I didn't have a ton of options. Ideally, to represent the 'rag tag' nature of the pirate band I'd love each model to be unique but... we just don't have enough models in the lower points zone yet - keep the faith. 🙂 The Warhawk squad belongs to the second in command - fancy names coming soon 'TM'. The Warhawk itself is probably the best 'fighting model' in the band. The long range MACs and Guided Missiles allow it to stand back and engage at traditional CAV range. The 2 chieftains I think of as Harpoons. They rush forward and try to harass and harm the enemy all the while drawing attention (and fire to them). The Ashigaru is an odd bird. Its main job is to provide ECM support for its brethren. However, any model it shares a Target Lock for allow it to fire it's Guided Missiles. If it dares to show it's head. 🙂 The Voodoo squad works in a similar fashion to the Warhawk squad but, because it is the Captain's squad, it has a few extra luxuries. The Banshees fulfill a similar role to the Chieftains. They move forward and harass the enemy with the threat of their powerful PBGs. The Captain - being the VIP they are - splits the electronic warfare role across 2 models - the Black Mamba and the Sabre. Together, they fulfill an almost identical role to the Ashigaru except they can be in 2 different place and losing one of them doesn't lose all of your EW abilities. This unit really wants to fight other squads and doesn't do it very well. Most of its firepower is very short ranged. If it gets caught in open terrain it'll suffer from an enemy force with longer range firepower - likely a loss. If it can leverage terrain and cover long enough to get its PBGs into the battle it can be a problem for similar pointed squads. Honestly, this unit is me creating a story in my head about a Pirate Force and then making them a unit in CAV. It wouldn't be hard to create a MUCH nastier force at the same points level and wipe these guys and gals off the board. My point isn't to build a winning force but to build a fun unit. Something I like the story behind. The kind of story that grows and twists with each battle the Small Fry face. As a quick side note about 'non-optimal forces' like the Small Fry. You can win without min-maxed models. I won the the 2022 CAVCon tournament using a force whose highest strength weapon was 5. I encourage you to make forces that fit the story of CAV and make your unit a chapter in the grand game. Have fun!

  20. I know in the grand scheme of things when playing a miniature game it is far easier to just wipe out the other side than to try to win a match through alternate means. But what are some scenarios and ideas that you could incorporate into a game to make it more than just a shoot-em up all the time. Herre are some ideas I'm trying to develope for just that reason! Alternate Objectives List 1 Capture and control key strategic points on the battlefield. Eliminate enemy units and/or destroy enemy structures. Escort friendly units or convoys to a specific location. Defend a friendly base or structure from enemy attack. Capture or neutralize enemy weapons or technology. Assassinate or capture enemy leaders or VIPs. Sabotage or destroy enemy production or supply facilities. Seize control of a vital resource or objective, such as a power plant or communication hub. Complete a stealth mission without detection. Mount a rescue or recovery operation for friendly units or civilians. Infiltrate and sabotage enemy command and control systems. Hold out against a superior enemy force for a set amount of time. Defend against a surprise enemy attack and counterattack to gain the initiative. Complete a scavenger hunt for special items or objectives that are scattered around the battlefield. Complete a race to be the first to reach a specific destination. Overall Objective Goals Capture and control key strategic points on the battlefield: Each point controlled earns a set number of points, with bonus points awarded for holding multiple points or for holding them for a certain period of time. Eliminate enemy units and/or destroy enemy structures: Each enemy unit or structure destroyed earns a set number of points. Escort friendly units or convoys to a specific location: Successfully escorting a unit or convoy earns a set number of points, with bonus points awarded for completing the task quickly or under heavy enemy fire. Defend a friendly base or structure from enemy attack: Each enemy unit or structure destroyed while defending earns a set number of points, with bonus points awarded for successfully defending the base or structure without taking significant damage. Capture or neutralize enemy weapons or technology: Capturing or neutralizing a specific enemy weapon or technology earns a set number of points. Assassinate or capture enemy leaders or VIPs: Assassinating or capturing a specific enemy leader or VIP earns a set number of points. Sabotage or destroy enemy production or supply facilities: Destroying or sabotaging an enemy facility earns a set number of points. Seize control of a vital resource or objective, such as a power plant or communication hub: Seizing control of a specific resource or objective earns a set number of points. Complete a stealth mission without detection: Completing the mission without being detected earns a set number of points, with bonus points awarded for completing the mission quickly. Mount a rescue or recovery operation for friendly units or civilians: Successfully rescuing or recovering friendly units or civilians earns a set number of points. Infiltrate and sabotage enemy command and control systems: Successfully infiltrating and sabotaging the enemy command and control systems earns a set number of points. Hold out against a superior enemy force for a set amount of time: Holding out for the specified amount of time earns a set number of points. Defend against a surprise enemy attack and counterattack to gain the initiative: Successfully defending and counterattacking earns a set number of points. Complete a scavenger hunt for special items or objectives that are scattered around the battlefield: Finding and collecting all the items or objectives earns a set number of points. Complete a race to be the first to reach a specific destination: Being the first to reach the destination earns a set number of points. At the end of the game, the side with the most points wins. It's important to note that each game can have its own point system or scoring system, and the objectives and points can be adjusted or modified to fit the scenario or game-play that you want to achieve. Ways to Score each Objective Type Capture and control key strategic points on the battlefield: Sub-objective: Capture key points on the battlefield, such as a hilltop, a bridge, or a communication hub. Scoring system: Each point captured and held earns a set number of points, for example 10 points. It's important to note that these objectives and scoring system can be tailored to fit the specific game you have in mind. The key is to make sure that the objectives are clear and fair for all players, and that the scoring system is easy to understand and keeps the game balanced and competitive. Let me know what you think or ways to flesh these out!

  24. Progress shot, I was able to get the stripes done and the wasp painted on for unit mark. I think the unit will be the ‘Black Wasps’. The canopy is probably done as well, but I may try some more blending on it, not sure yet? For the base I will be doing something other than what is in the photo below, but I haven’t decided just yet.

  25. Many probably know this already. When taking a photo, your camera will try to "guess" what is black and what is white, making getting correct colors interesting. I haven't taken a picture of a miniature yet, but I have taken pictures of my terrain builds in the past. Before taking a picture, put a small disc that is half black (darkest black you can find) and half pure white in a corner of your picture. Make sure the camera can "see" it when taking your picture. It will then know what is black and what is white, and the rest of your picture will be color-correct. Just crop out the disc and nobody will be the wiser.

  26. I have completed the next step in getting these models ready for the table top. They have been sanded, and bondo, gap filler applied to smooth out some of the print lines. Then I applied automotive filler primer to further help with smoothing. The prepared/smoothed 3D prints you see below are ready for painting. I did not fill in the print lines where all the windows and such are because I don’t want to accidentally fill in any details. Further painted pictures are on they once painting is complete.

  30. This is my review of the new DualCast King Cobra. Things to be aware of, DualCast is not as rigid as the KS3 material was. It is easier to cut. Also any filing, sanding you want to do, watch yourself, and your details that you do not want to lose. Please read through. If you dont know what the King Cobra is, take a look here. Yep thats right its a DT 8 recon.. So here are all the parts that come in the blister. You get a Left lower leg, Right lower leg, Hip with both upper legs, Right arm, left arm and torso. Now you will notice that there are extra parts on these. Due to the new DualCast process we will see these on some of the newer items. They are molded like metal casts, but its thermoplastic resin. So some of the minor imperfections that we would see with metal we will sometimes see here too. These are most of the tools I use. Some clipers from the hardware store for the larger gates, smaller ones for the small gates and anything else I need to nip off. A sharp hobby knife, a mold line scraper, some files and sanding sticks. So I use my larger clipers to get the big gates, nips them right off. Then I use the smaller clipers to get the smaller gates. Now I take the gates off the back of the upper legs. Then the Smaller gates. Now I use some sanding sticks to help level out where the large gates were at on the back of the knee joint. Didnt work as well as I would have liked so I got one of my files out. You may find some extra bits here and there, if you dont like them then use a sharp hobby knife to remove them. Sometimes I need some speed so I break out my dremel, I have some diamond dremel bits and this one here works great at removing mold lines, and other imperfections. Its not as harsh on the material as well. Once I'm done with the lower legs, and hip parts I move on to the Torso. Found a small piece on top that I felt needed to be removed. Then I went to work on the arms. Once I was done removing all the mold lines and fixing a few trouble spots, just a little bit of CA glue and some CA Accelerator, and it went together like a charm. So overall, I really like the fact that the minis are made in the USA. The details on the new minis are just as clean and crisp as the KS3 minis, maybe more so. The new DualCast is easier to work with in my opinion. I can see lots of conversions in the near future for me. I can never have enough parts.... I do dislike having to deal with mold lines but with the tools I have it makes dealing with those easier to handle. It is odd to me that this is a plastic mini but it has some of the same issues as a metal mini. I'm sure that is because they share some similar steps. I ordered 2 of the King Cobras. My first one did not have a lot of issues just the normal clean up for me. Second King Cobra did have some pesky mold lines I had to deal with on one of the arms, the one with the extra flashing you see above. My dremel and hobby knife helped me to remove those. One of the lower legs did have a detail that didnt quite get filled out. The lower legs have 3 raised squarish details and on one of the legs one of the raised parts was smooth and glossy kind of like it didnt get quite enough of the material to it. I was able to square it up and remove the glossiness with my tools. All in all though I would have to say I am quite happy with the model. Yes they may have issues that needs some creative thinking or some elbow grease to get worked out. At this price point I am happy to do that. Some may use the slight imperfections to show as battle damage, I dont have a lot of luck doing that myself so I just do what I can. All I can say is im not paying a "Preimum" price for a "Preimum" model that has issues. So tell me what you think. I may do more of these for the other new units. Thanks

Today they brought a Attack squad of 2 Centurion Mk.2's, 1 Crusader and a Spartan and a Specialist Squad of 2 Flail fire support tanks. Here we have the Malvernis Force The Swift Death consisting of an Attack Squad of 5 Banshee hover tanks, a Recon Squad of 4 Nomad vehicles (played ironically by Templar Mambas) and a Specialist Squad of 2 Butchers (with external FCS and Ammo Bin add-ons), 1 Specter B and 1 Shadow. The initial deployments were as thus. The Templar spread out a bit and the Flails started behind the hill on the Right expecting to rain rockets down from afar while the CAV's blasted anything coming over the bridge. The Malvernis deployed the Specialist Squad in the Center to blast anything trying to come over the bridge while the Banshees deployed on the left side with intent to cross the river and hit the flank while the CAV's forced the bridge. The Nomads spread out to provide overlapping ECM bubbles so that if someone got frisky with their MAC's or R10's there would still be coverage. The Malvernis got the first activation and started by advancing the Nomads and activating the ECM. The Banshees on the second card flip and followed suit and advanced forward 10" to activate Double Time but skipped their next action as they didn't want to get too far ahead just yet. Templar got the 3rd card and activated their Flails which tried lobbing Rockets at the enemy but they missed. Malvernis got the 4th card and activated their Specialist squad. The Shadow, having flashbacks to last game where it died Turn 1 ran for the Forest and grabbed a Target Lock on a Centurion which it passed to the rest of the squad via EST. It then remembered it's Chameleon ability and tried very hard to look like a tree. The Specter B moved forward and pelted the rearmost Centurion with Guided Missiles at Extreme Range and actually did 2 damage and a Suppression and Knock Down due to a Critical Hit, Shock and a Failed Piloting Check. The Butchers moved forward and appeared to lay down an additional 3 damage but then it was realized that sometime during their activation their owner had a stroke and started playing Warhammer 40k rules and completely cheated on their attacks. He then apologized and walked all their shooting back. The last activation card went to the Templar Specialist squad where the Spartan took shelter in the valley and popped it's ECM, the Rearmost Centurion stood up and tried to repair itself and failed and the front most Centurion advanced and found out it was out of range for any MAC attacks. The Crusader advanced but couldn't get a target lock to pass with EST due to all the ECM and couldn't shoot anything due to the short range PBG's it carries. Next up I forgot to take pictures in order so I'm sure I missed something. For Malvernis the Banshee's did a double move and started crossing the River. The Nomads moved up as far as they could to keep the ECM umbrella out as far as they could. The Specialist squad advanced on the Bridge in preparation for crossing while the Shadow remained in seclusion in the forest. For the Templar the Centurions moved past the Spartan to range on the enemy. They did manage to ding a Banshee despite Double time and a lack of target locks. The Flails managed to drop a brace of rockets on a Nomad and damage it pretty good. Here we have a picture of some Banshees enjoying the water. So those of you may remember that the 2 Centurions had advanced to bring their MACs to bear on the enemy. This time the Banshee's advanced to bring their PBG's to bear on the Centurions which they promptly Overdrove. End result 1 Banshee with no gun (Crit Fumble) a 2nd Banshee getting scratched and a severely dead Centurion. Here the Remaining Centurion fired it's MAC's and dealt 3 more damage to an already scratched Banshee. The Crusader racked up it's PBGs and laid a hurt on the lead Butcher for 6 damage due to Overdriven guns and a high roll. The Butcher, shaken by the hit, did not return nearly as much damage. On Round 7 the Banshee's destroyed the 2nd Centurion with massed Overdriven PBG's and managed a shot against the Spartan which knocked it down on a failed pilot check. At this point my opponent conceded defeat and we ended the game. Things learned today. 1. Again it's a numbers game. The side with more squads gets more cards in the initiative deck and more opportunities to react to and counter enemy moves 2. If one side brings a recon squad and the other doesn't, the side that doesn't is at a severe disadvantage. Between ECM not allowing target locks making long range fire inaccurate and preventing the use of Guided Missiles and the Recon Squad ability to move flipped initiative cards to the bottom of the deck that weakly armed, poorly armored squad can cause problems way out of proportion to the points spent. 3. Overdriven PBG's hurt like hell. Keep them away from you or kill them on the other side of the table. 4. Fire Support Models need Target Locks, and LOS (if possible) in order to use Rockets effectively. The idea of raining Hellfire down on your enemy from a safe distance away is a nice one but in practice without Target Locks the penalties to Long or Extreme range bombardments are too high. I don't think a single IF salvo fired today landed on target. All damage done was from scattered shots. 5. Hover tanks skimming over water look cool. Hover tanks skimming over water and then destroying Super Heavy CAV's in 1 turn look REALLY Cool. P.S. CAVBoss if you're reading this every faction needs to have models for it's Recon Vehicles. They are too damn useful not to use and by my count Malvernis, Ritterlich and Almirithil have none and Adon has the Dragonfly aircraft which is nice and all but it doesn't have ECM.

  38. Its also totally legal for the sake of a faction force and while it disallows doctrines right now, that may change down the road. It is basically models from two different squads being tasked together for a mission need. You could have a Templar faction squad with 4 vehicles and 2 CAVs and use that as the reasoning, story-wise, and still play a legal force with a accurate back-story. CB
